About Jordan

Jordan Love attended Liberty High School in Bakersfield, California where he had to work his way to become a quarterback at an early age. His freshman year he was told he couldn’t play quarterback, but by his senior year he would end up throwing for 2,148 yards and 24 touchdowns and rushed for 806 yards and 8 more touchdowns. Love would go on to be pretty un recruited, and only received one D1 offer which was from Utah State. He would end up committing to the Aggies on June 15th, 2015.

After redshirting his first year in Logan, he would play in all 12 games as a redshirt freshman. Love would end up starting the final six games that season, completing 55% of his passes for 1,631 yards and eight touchdowns. Utah State would go 3-3 in those six games, including a loss to New Mexico State in the Arizona Bowl.

During his redshirt sophomore year Love would jump onto the NFL Draft scene with a terrific 2018 season. Utah State would have their first 11 win season, and go on to beat a hot North Texas team in the New Mexico Bowl 52-13. Not only did the Aggies set school records, Jordan Love would go on to set second year records for passing yards, touchdown passes, and 300-yard games. Love would finish the season with 3,567 yards, 32 touchdown passes and a 64% completion percentage.

2019 would be a heck of a lot tougher for the potential first round prospect due to Utah State’s head coach leaving for Texas Tech and the loss of key offensive members. As a junior Jordan Love threw for 3,402 yards, 20 passing touchdowns but 17 interceptions and actually had more interceptions than touchdowns until their bowl game. The new offense had plenty of bumps and twists for the Aggies, but they would finish 7-5 after they lost in the Frisco Bowl to Kent State.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

Jordan Love is a 6’4, 225 Lb quarterback with a strong arm and good athleticism. His ball placement is superb, can hit tight windows all across the field, and shows great presence in the pocket. You gotta love how effortlessly he can throw the ball 50 yards down the field. His arm strength proves he will be able to his move the ball down the field even with the weather isn’t the best, which is a big plus is his draftability in my book.

Along with his pocket presence, he keeps his feet involved and use his legs to him push the ball down the field. He also can use his legs to get outside the pocket to continue the play. He has a great tendency to keep his eyes down the field for the pass, but sometimes he can get pressured into the wrong pass.

Weaknesses

His decision making can be very questionable at times, almost relying on his physical talent to complete the pass. He is a very “look and go” type quarterback right now. He will just ignore the coverage and throw the ball to the first or second option. His consistency will be questioned considering his sophomore to junior year differences, and can even be seen in his lower body when passing. He does have the off the field marijuana citation, nothing major on the surface but could question his ability to be the head of the offense.

NFL Draft Projection

Jordan Love will be an interesting prospect for many different teams considering he doesn’t have to be played ASAP. The Colts, the Bucs, and the Patriots will all be in play to draft him especially if he falls into the 2nd round.

Ultimately I think a team will trade up at the bottom of the 1st if they are really sold on Love, just like the Ravens did with Lamar, but I would love to see Tampa Bay select him in the 2nd round. Jameis Winston is in a make it or break it year, seemingly yet again, and drafting Jordan Love gives them the option to finally pull the plug on him if needed. Also Bruce Arians came out of retirement for this job, he would probably prefer his own quarterback to mold into an NFL star.

NFL Player Comp

Love flashes plenty of the natural tools to be great in the NFL, but could also very easily be broken if he isn’t groomed his first few years. Like Cousins was able to do in Washington, Love can take care of his football I.Q. first, and then take advantage of the opportunity that will come.  I think Jordan Love could potentially be better than Cousins considering he is a more gifted passer but could also just be a Jameis Winston 2.0 if he is drafted to a lazy coaching staff.
