Deshaun Watson Signs a 4-Year-$156M Extension With The Houston Texans

This evening the Houston Texans made the news for positive reasons for the first time in what feels like forever. It was announced that they will be keeping their Pro Bowl quarterback, Deshaun Watson, for another six years.

This makes Watson the 2nd highest paid quarterback in NFL history, behind Patrick Mahomes groundbreaking contract.

Watson was the 12th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, after the Texans traded up with the Cleveland Browns. During his three seasons, the former Clemson Tiger has thrown for 9,716 yards, 71 passing touchdowns and 29 interceptions. He has also put up solid numbers on the ground, rushing for 1,233 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Since entering the NFL Deshaun Watson hasn’t just been one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but he has made Houston relevant again. The Texans won the AFC South last season, and a divisional round playoff appearance after beating the Bills in the Wild Card round.

Locking down Deshaun Watson is the biggest signing the Texans have made in my lifetime. He has proved on multiple occasions that he is worth that contract, and we have seen how troublesome it can be the longer you wait to sign your franchise quarterback. Now that they have Watson signed in for the long haul, they can now work on fixing the rest of the roster around him in order to win games.
