Five-Star DT Maason Smith Commits to the LSU Tigers

Maason Smith Commits to LSU

For months now LSU has been the favorite to land Louisania’s No.1 prospect, defensive tackle Maason Smith. On National Signing Day, Smith made it official announcing he will be committing to Ed Orgeron’s Tigers. Smith was one of the nation’s top uncommitted recruits deciding between LSU, Alabama, Georgia and Miami.

Smith has been rated as high as the nation’s No. 1 recruit (Rivals.com), and comes in at 6’5, 316-pounds. After taking a hard look at his top schools recruiting classes, LSU was the lone school without a commitment at defensive tackle. He announced his decision on his Instagram live stream Wednesday afternoon.

“Definitely with the defense I feel I can go in as a true freshman and make a big impact on the defense, especially on the defensive line” – Maason Smith to 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong

He is probably right about that. Many scouts say Maason should be college ready, and should be able to find time early as a freshman. The Tigers 2021 recruiting class now has two five-star recruits (Sage Ryan) and they are both on the defensive side of the ball. They also have four-star recruits Deion Smith, Chris Hilton and Garrett Nussmeier committed.

This is a nice positive for LSU after a rather rough year on the field and maybe even rougher off the field. Not too long ago LSU announced a self-imposed bowl ban for the 2020 season due to NCAA violations. As well as the up and down season, it is good for the Tigers to build somewhat of a hot streak. LSU currently has the No. 4 overall recruiting class in 2021 and the 3rd best in the SEC.
