Steve Sarkisian has been head coach for a little over a month now at the University of Texas but things have already changed tremendously. After landing Armani Winfield before even stepping foot on campus the ball has been rolling quickly. Things really just got serious though with the Longhorns latest commitment, Maalik Murphy.
Maalik Murphy has been Steve Sarkisan’s No. 1 target since arriving at Texas. This is a flex to Sarkisan’s ability to recruit from the west coast as Murphy plays for Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, California. He is the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the nation according to 247Sports, & ESPN and is one of the Top 5 players in California for the Class of 2022.
As of Saturday afternoon Murphy has been offered a scholarship from 31 schools such as Ohio State, Alabama and USC. UCLA and Oregon were supposedly some of his leaders before Texas’ rebuild of their staff. It was reported that Murphy could be making a visit to Austin next week, but it looks like he doesn’t even need to take it.
At this point Longhorn nation knows not to get too excited though. This is the second five-star quarterback to commit to Texas in the Class of 2022. Last August we saw the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2022, Quinn Ewers, commit to the Longhorns before decommiting just three months later. Ewers would commit to Ohio State less than a month later.
Currently Texas has the 7th best recruiting class for the 2022 recruiting cycle. They are also No. 2 in the Big-12, behind Oklahoma. He joins four-stars Armani Winfield, Jaylon Guilbeau, and Jaydon Blue. Momentum is on Texas’ side and Maalik Murphy could give Sarkisian an amazing first recruiting class in Austin.
