Five-Star WR Luther Burden Decommits from the University of Oklahoma

Luther Burden

With all the hype surrounding the Oklahoma Sooners and their recruiting process; we finally have some bad news for Sooners fans. Tuesday evening five-star wide receiver Luther Burden announced that he would be decommitting from the University of Oklahoma, and reopening his recruitment. Now all of a sudden the Sooners have no wide receivers currently committed in the 2022 cycle.

Luther Burden is a 6’2, 194-pound receiver out of East St. Louis High School in East St. Louis, Illinois. He is the No. 1 receiver in the Class of 2022, and the No. 5 overall recruit according to 247Sports composite rankings. Nearly 40 schools have reached out and offered Burden a scholarship such as Florida, LSU, Ohio State and USC.

During the offseason Luther took visits to Alabama, Georgia, Missouri & Oklahoma. Burden’s Missouri visit left a very good impression on the five-star receiver and could be a factor in his decision to reopen his recruitment.

Back in late June we saw Oklahoma’s recruiting class get ripped apart with decommitments. On June 14th four-star wide receiver Jordan Hudson announced he would be decommitting from the Sooners. He later would end up committing to SMU. Then four-star wide receiver Talyn Shettron flipped his commitment from Oklahoma to Oklahoma State in late June.

Now the Sooners are in a very unfamiliar spot with no receivers on board, and very little to pick from in the Top-50. Could we maybe see OU pull away someone like Evan Stewart out of Frisco? If not they most likely will have to find a way to flip another receiver, or bite the bullet and recruit receivers heavily in 2023.
