Nation’s No. 1 CB Tony Grimes Commits to University of North Carolina

Tony Grimes

Wednesday afternoon ESPN’s 6th overall prospect in the class of 2021 committed to the University of North Carolina live on CBS Sports. This is a huge statement for Mack Brown going forward on the recruiting trail and it pushes the Tar Heels 2021 recruiting to 3rd in the nation according to 247Sports.

Tony Grimes plays football at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, VA and helped them to an 8-3 record in 2019. The 6’0, 190-pound cornerback is one the University’s highest rated recruits ever, and obviously had offers from all over the country. He matches his long frame with track speed, and that makes life very difficult for receivers.

Having an elite level talent like Grimes commit to North Carolina over schools like Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia is just another feather in the cap for Mack Brown. Dre Bly was a huge piece in getting the nation’s No. 1 CB to call Chapel Hill his next step in his football career.

“He knows where we came up from, and how hard it is because he did it. Dre was ‘The Man’ at UNC. He went to UNC. In the Hall Fame, Pro Bowl, Super Bowl. I love Dre.”

Crawford, Brad. “Reaction: 5-Star Tony Grimes Commits to North Carolina.” 247Sports, 247sports.com/LongFormArticle/Tony-Grimes-North-Carolina-Tar-Heels-UNC-recruiting-five-star-Mack-Brown-148687329/.

You have to look all the way back to 2007 to see UNC have a recruiting class crack the top-10, which featured the nation’s No. 1 defensive tackle, Marvin Austin. What other chips could we see fall now that the Tar Heels finally have their Ferrari.
