North Shore High School Survives Katy Tompkins High School 47-22

It was windy, chilly, but sunny at Legacy Stadium as the North Shore Mustangs matched up against the Katy Tompkins Falcons. Though we are here in Katy, Texas the future of the Iron Bowl rivalry begins here. Katy Tompkins quarterback, Jalen Milroe, is on his way to the University of Alabama and North Shore quarterback, Dematrius Davis, is on his way to Auburn.

North Shore would start off with the ball after receiving the opening kickoff for the game. Both teams came into this match up with some of the best defenses in the state. They showed up too, with both offenses unable to find points on their first drive.

The Mustangs would wake up though. After driving down the field Dematrius Davis would cap off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown. North Shore would miss the extra point, giving them a 6-0 lead. Milroe would try to come back with a score of his own, but would throw an interception instead. Junior cornerback Tavon Griffin would come down with the interception with a little over 2:30 left in the first.

The Falcons defense wouldn’t take that lightly though. The very next play Davis would be pressured on a pass, and fumble the ball away. Unfortunately the Falcons would be unable to capitalize on their turnover, and punt the ball away.

Dematrius Davis then put the Falcons on their heels. He would complete a quick pass to Shadrach Banks who would take it 80-yards for a touchdown. On their next drive Davis completed a short pass to Charles King for his third touchdown of the half. Suddenly the Falcons were staring at a 26-0 deficit.

Katy Tompkins would try their best to stop the bleeding with a touchdown before the half. At 6:18 in the 2nd quarter Jalen Milroe would complete a 23-yard touchdown pass to Marquis Shoulders. The half time score would settle at 26-7.

We wouldn’t see much second half action until late in the third quarter. With 5:31 left in the 3rd quarter Dematrius Davis would add onto his monster stat line for the day. The Mustangs would take a 33-7 lead as he rushed in his second touchdown of the day.

Tompkins would show some life thanks to Marquis Shoulders returning the opening second half kickoff for a touchdown. Shoulders bobbed and weaved his way into an open field for a 65-yard return. The game would be 33-14 with 5:14 left in the third.

North Shore would get the ball back and drive down the field getting the ball within the 30-yard line. Right before the third quarter would end though, No. 45 from Tompkins would intercept Davis’ attempt at a screen pass.

After a slew of penalties, the Falcons were looking at a 1st & 35 at their own 15. Luckily for them, Marquis Shoulders would continue his huge game with a 85-yard touchdown run. After completing the two point conversion, the score would be 33-22 with 10 minutes in the 4th.

The Mustangs would come back with a score of their own though. After moving down inside the 5-yard line, Davis would take it himself for his 5th touchdown of the game. The defense would step up too, locking down the Falcons offense keeping the game 40-22.

With such a large lead the Mustangs would attempt to run out the rest of this clock. Shadrach Banks would fare too much for the Falcons defense though. After carrying nearly half the defense more than 10-yards, the Mustangs would be in scoring position again. Once again Dematrius Davis would keep the read-option, giving him four rushing touchdowns on the day.

Tompkins High School wouldn’t be able to score again, ending the game at 47-22. Dematrius Davis finished the game with six total touchdowns and surpassed 3,000 yards passing on the season. Shadrach Banks had over 150 total yards and a receiving touchdown. Even though it was in a losing effort, Marquis Shoulders was definitely the most outstanding player with this touchdown hat-trick.

North Shore advances to the Quarterfinal rounds of the UIL 6A-I State Championship. As the Mustangs move to 13-0 they await the winner of Ridge Point High School vs Atascocita High School. North Shore High School already faced and beat Atascocita High School earlier in the year 63-14.
