TCU Announces Sonny Dykes as the New Head Coach

A new era has begun in Fort Worth as the Horned Frogs have moved on from Gary Patterson. His replacement? Look no further than 40 minutes down I-30.

TCU has agreed to bring on Sonny Dykes as the new head coach of the program, and he’s bringing a lot of big names as well. He brings over former SMU OC Garrett Riley, assistant head coach/ running backs coach Ra’Shaad Samples, and USC’s recruiting specialist Bryan Carrington. DL coach Chidera Uzo-Diribe, WR coach David Gru, and SMU’s strength and conditioning coach Kaz Kazadi will also be joining the staff.

Those names will be huge for TCU’s future as the Horned Frogs now have one of the best recruiting teams in Texas. Current wide receivers coach Malcolm Kelly has already been a very successful recruiter in the past. All three together should be able to put together some very talented recruiting classes across the next few seasons.

As of recent Sonny has done a great job at recruiting the Dallas area and keeping the talent home. Some notable commits have been Preston Stone, Jordan Hudson, Chace Biddle, and Danny Gray who all came from the Dallas area. Danny Gray was actually once a TCU commit before flipping to SMU before National Signing Day.

Sonny Dykes went 30-17 over five seasons at SMU, and has previous stops at University of California, and Louisiana Tech. He was also an offensive analyst for TCU the year before he was hired at SMU. The Mustangs were 10-3 in 2019 and have been to a bowl game three of the four years under Dykes. While it seems rather tough to move on from such a historic head coach as Gary Patterson, the future sure does look bright in Funky-Town.
