UNC Commit Tony Grimes Plans to Reclassify to the Class of 2020

UNC commit Tony Grimes, and the nation’s No. 1 cornerback in the Class of 2021, plans to reclassify into the Class of 2020 and enroll in school on August 1st. 247Sports spoke with Grimes’ father, Deon Glover, who said due to the uncertainty surrounding high school sports this fall they have decided it is best to expedite this high school career.

Grimes is a 6’0, 190-pound cornerback from Virginia Beach, Virginia and attends Princess Anne High School. He was ranked as high as 6th overall in ESPN’s Class of 2021 but his current grade of 90 would have him tied for 11th in the Class of 2020.

He doesn’t want to wait around and blow a whole season waiting around to see what’s going to happen with high school sports. He’s going to go ahead and move forward.” – Deon Glover

Barrett Sallee Jul 10. North Carolina Commit Tony Grimes, the Top-Ranked Cornerback in the Class of 2021, Plans Reclassify to 2020. 10 July 2020, www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/north-carolina-commit-tony-grimes-the-top-ranked-cornerback-in-the-class-of-2021-plans-re-classify-to-2020/.

The 5-star CB originally committed to North Carolina over Ohio State, Texas A&M, and Alabama back on June 30th. He would go on to say how Mack Brown’s ability to win with anything was a big reason he trusts him with his football career. Dre Bly was also a big factor in his commitment to the school.

This will now give the Tar Heels two 5-star prospects heading into the 2020-21 college football season. UNC also received a commitment from Desmond Evans, the nation’s No. 1 DE in the Class of 2020.

Though normally seen in the basketball world, reclassifying isn’t a new thing for college sports. Could we see this trend leak into the football world? College football players don’t have the ease of going “one and done” but this certainly helps speed up the process.
