It was perfect high school playoff weather down in Waco Friday night for our Game of the Week. The Denton Ryan Raiders took on the College Station Cougars in a 5A-I Area Playoff match up. College Station High School came into 10-1, whereas Denton Ryan High School came in 10-0 and No. 1 in 5A-1.
Things started off hot for the Cougars by taking the opening kick off for a touchdown to take an early lead. The Raiders would respond with a great return of their own, and march down the field to quickly tie it up 7-7. Anthony Hill Jr would be the running back to punch it in.
Denton Ryan was able to stall the Cougars on their next drive, forcing a punt. On the attempt, Khalon Davis blocked the attempt giving the Raiders great field position once again. A few plays later Kalib Hicks would break off for a 46-yard touchdown run to start off his big night.
College Station would attempt to respond and developed a good drive down the field. Unfortunately for College Station they would fail to convert a 4th down in Ryan territory. That would prove to be a mistake with Ja’Tavion Sanders breaking off a 61-yard touchdown reception.
Billy Bowman would come up with an interception giving the Raiders the ball at midfield. Bowman would then show us why he is the No. 3 ATH in the nation. Seth Henigan would lead Denton Ryan down the field capping off the drive with a nine-yard touchdown reception from Billy Bowman.
The first quarter would end 28-7, and things were already out of control for College Station. Kalib Hicks added a 49-yard touchdown run to pair with his one from 46-yards out earlier. Hicks would finish the game with 186 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
It would be 35-7 at halftime, and not get much more interesting than that for the rest of the game. Early in the third quarter Ja’Tavion Sanders added another huge touchdown reception to his stat line. He would completely out man his defender and complete the 35-yard touchdown atop his head.
Seth Henigan would add one more touchdown to the box score before the fourth quarter with a pass to Keagan Cunningham. The Cougars Roderick Brown would break off a game high 85-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.
Tonight’s final score would be 52-21 after College Station was able to score a few garbage time points. Memphis commit Seth Henigan threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns on the night. Future Longhorn, Ja’Tavion Sanders had eight catches for 216 yards and two touchdowns. All together Denton Ryan High School put up over 600 total yards of offense tonight in their victory.
Next round the Raiders will face off against the Longview High School in the Regional level of the Texas High School playoffs. Longview defeated Lancaster High School 56-20 Friday night as well.
