Wednesday evening Aggies Nation got a huge boost to their 2023 recruiting class. In a somewhat surprising move, five-star defensive lineman David Hicks announced he will be committing with Texas A&M University. This came after weeks of reports that he was leaning to commit to Oklahoma.
David Hicks is a five-star defensive lineman that plays for Katy Paetow High School in Katy, Texas. Hicks has nearly 40 offers, and has visited schools from all over the country. He was able to narrow his list down early this month featuring schools like Oregon, Michigan State, Alabama, Oklahoma and more. He already comes in at 6’4, 270-lbs and is easily one of the most dominant defensive lineman I have been able to see with my own eyes.
The Aggies have been one of the best teams in the country at recruiting the defensive line position over the past five years. Obviously they just landed the No. 1 defensive tackle in the Class of 2023, and have their name in the caps of other ‘23 DL talent. Last year’s historic class featured the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 & No. 6 overall DL prospects and edge rushers like Enai White & Malick Sylla. In 2021 the Aggies landed five-star defensive lineman out of DeSoto, Shemar Turner.
All this can be attributed to the way Jimbo Fisher believes A&M can compete with the powerhouses of College Football. Not just Alabama & Georgia in the SEC but teams like Clemson, Ohio State, and Michigan who they could see in the CFB Playoff. That is being able to have elite talent all throughout the trenches and be able to dominate the line of scrimmage. Texas A&M has always been able to recruit the offensive line, and develop them into NFL talents, but Jimbo wants it on both sides of the ball.
With the elite talent the Aggies have been able to recruit to College Station, it is just a matter of time before they start having the talent level of an Alabama or Ohio State. Already in the 2023 recruiting cycle they have landed five-star linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. and have continued to juice up their secondary. T.J. Shanahan Jr. also recently announced his commitment to the Aggies.
In 2023 we will see a lot of the talent from that 2022 class shine through even more than we have thus far. The expectations for the Aggies could never be higher, but we will see what they can do with this talent as the future unrolls.
