The Oklahoma Sooners were an early winner during 2020’s National Signing Day. There wasn’t much hype going in for the Sooners but they were able to land the one prospect they really had a shot with. One of the first commitments of the day was five-star offensive tackle, Savion Byrd, who announced his decision on CBS Sports HQ.
Savion Byrd is a monstrous offensive tackle for Texas High School powerhouse Duncanville High School. Byrd comes in at 6’5, 295-pounds and has helped Duncanville to two straight 6A Texas State Title appearances. SMU, Texas, LSU, Auburn and Oklahoma all made his final cut, but it was rumored that SMU was the favorite amongst the five.
Byrd is a freak athlete even at his giant size. He played defensive tackle for Duncanville before his senior season, and was very successful at the position. The Dallas native is a physical tackle that bullies his defender all the way till the whistle. The Sooners could even ask him to move inside, and would be a monster when asked to be a pulling guard.
Oklahoma has now landed three big time recruits in the state of Texas including Billy Bowman and Clayton Smith. The Sooners also have the No. 1 quarterback in 2021, Caleb Williams, committed to the university. I am sure Williams is more than happy the Sooners landed a talent like Savion Byrd to the offensive line.
Top offensive linemen Tristan Leigh and Bryce Foster are still in the air for the Sooners as well. Foster will be picking between the Sooners and Texas A&M this Friday while Leigh is set to announce his decision Jan. 2nd. Could Savion Byrd’s commitment be enough to sway another top lineman to Norman?
In the past the Sooners and offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh have produced tons of NFL offensive lineman. Orlando Brown, Bobby Evans, Cody Ford, and soon to be Creed Humphrey are just a few of the handful of offensive linemen starting in the NFL today.
