Fresh off his April Fools joke a few weeks ago Jacoby Mathews made a serious announcement this time around. Friday afternoon the nation’s No. 2 safety in the Class of 2022 made his decision to stay home for his college career. He announced via social media that he will be committing to the LSU Tigers.
Jacoby Mathews is a 6’2, 205-pound five-star safety from Ponchatoula, Louisiana. He is the nation’s No. 2 safety in the Class of 2022, and the 3rd overall player in the state of Louisiana. Jacob plays football at Ponchatoula High School where he has been a true do it all athlete for the Green Wave. He has lined up at quarterback, safety, cornerback, running back, and pretty much any other position you could think of for Ponchatoula.
As you can imagine Mathews had offers from all over the country. He released a top six list on April 6th featuring LSU, Texas, Clemson, Arizona State, USC and Florida. Near the end it looked to be between LSU and Texas, but Mason Smith was able to reel in the five-star prospect. Jacoby Mathews told 247Sports that Smith was able to build the closest relationship with him during the recruiting process which helped him stay home with the Tigers.
This now puts the Tigers less than two points behind Ohio State for the No. 2 class in the nation. LSU has already landed five-stars Walker Howard and Will Campbell in the boat. The No. 1 tight end in the Class of ’22, Jake Johnson, announced his commitment to LSU last week as well.Â
He will be joining an extremely stacked defensive back group once he lands in Baton Rouge. Last recruiting class we saw the Tigers land not just one but two of the top four safeties in the entire class. They also have four-star cornerbacks Damarius McGhee, JaDarian Rhym and Laterrance Welch locked in too. Add Eli Ricks into that mix too and it will be fun too see what LSU can put together in the next few seasons.
