SEC football kicked off for the first time this season Saturday afternoon and it was filled with everything you would expect. Upsets, blow outs, and plenty of first-round talent. Perhaps no one’s day was better than Florida’s redshirt senior quarterback, Kyle Trask.
He didn’t just finish the game with a career high 416 passing yards and six passing touchdowns, but Trask also led the Gators to a school record in total offense for SEC play. The six touchdowns tied the Florida Gators single-game touchdown record as well as Joe Burrow’s record for touchdown passes in an SEC opener.
After Felipe Franks went down with a broken ankle last season the Gators looked to Kyle Trask as his replacement. It evident that as the season went on, so did the quarterbacks’ understanding of the offense.
Trask proved that with the Gators 13-play opening drive which resulted in a touchdown. That touchdown was one of four touchdown receptions of the game for tight end Kyle Pitts.
Ole Miss would keep it close for most of the first half thanks to two Dontario Drummond touchdowns, one being a 46-yard reception. Tied 14-14, with just 3:05 left in the first half, the Florida Gators would flip this game on its head by scoring two touchdowns before the end of the half.
The Rebels finished the game with their own impressive performance on the offensive side of the ball. Matt Corral threw for 395 yards, three touchdowns and an interception while also rushing for another 50 yards on the ground. Elijah Moore recorded 10 receptions and 227 receiving yards for the Ole Miss Rebels. Together both offenses had over 1,250 yards of total offense during their matchup.
Next week the No. 5 Florida Gators will take on the South Carolina Gamecocks for their home opener. Ole Miss will look to bounce back against the No. 23 Kentucky Wildcats as they visit them in Lexington.
