Man has it been a rough year for the LSU Tigers. No more Joe Burrow, or Joe Brady, or even Ja’Marr Chase. Just one season after having probably the best season of all time in college football, the Tigers finished a whopping 5-5.
There were plenty of reasons this season went south for LSU. Whether it be injuries, COVID, the bowl ban, or just a pure lack of experience, the Tigers just never found a groove. Either way things are still going south in Baton Rouge as former five-star tight end, Arik Gilbert, has entered the transfer portal.
Gilbert has been away from the team for some time now, and needed time to think things over about his future. We all assumed that would mean a future transfer, but we all were just waiting for the confirmation. Saturday afternoon, we got just that with a quickly deleted tweet.
Coming in at 6’5, 249-pounds Arik was ready for college football the moment he graduated high school. In the Class of 2020 Arik Gilbert was a unanimous five-star prospect, and the best player in the state of Georgia. This obviously makes for no surprise that Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs were heavy favorites during his recruitment.
The freshman played in eight games for the LSU Tigers before opting-out due to injuries. Gilbert was able to record 35 catches for 368-yards and two touchdowns in those eight games. Due to a recently passed blanket waiver from the NCAA, if Gilbert does leave LSU his talents can be used immediately without losing a year.
