The Jacksonville Jaguars couldn’t have made it more clear in his tweet on Monday morning.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have reached max tanking levels by releasing their former 1st round running back, Leonard Fournette. Jacksonville head coach Doug Marrone said they failed at finding a trade partner for the young running back, and they “couldn’t get anything” in return.
While it makes sense for a rebuilding team to not see the need for a star running back at the end of his rookie deal, but that still doesn’t mean cutting Fournette wasn’t surprising. In his three seasons with Jacksonville, Fournette rushed for 2,631 yards and 17 touchdowns while also recording 134 receptions for 1,009 yards and two touchdowns.
Last season we saw a career year out of the former LSU Tiger. He rushed for a career high 1,152 yards and had a career high in receptions with 76. His 100.1 scrimmage yards per game ranks 5th amongst running backs since 2017.
Fournette saw his rookie contract guarantees revoked after fighting Buffalo Bills linebacker Shaq Lawson, and has had multiple issues with the team since being drafted in 2017. Jacksonville has been stuck in limbo for a while now after making the AFC Championship in 2017, and looks to finally have unloaded all the pieces left from that squad.
