After yet another disappointing loss from the Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson is making a switch. This Sunday the Philadelphia Eagles will have a new starting quarterback when they face off against the NFC leading New Orleans Saints. Jalen Hurts in, Carson Wentz out.
In that 30-16 loss to the Green Bay Packers Hurts relieved Carson Wentz during the 3rd quarter of the game. Doug Pederson said he was looking for a spark when asked about how the quarterback situation unfolded on Sunday. Pederson will continue to look for that spark as the Eagles attempt to end a four game losing streak.
Hurts wouldn’t be able to complete the comeback, but obviously showed enough to get the nod for Week 14. He would finish the game going 5 of 12 for 109 yards and one touchdown with an interception coming on the Eagles final drive.
Jalen Hurts was drafted in the second round last year, a move that shocked many football fans. Though Pederson immediately shut down any quarterback competition Hurts has managed to find his way onto the field. The Eagles have used him as wildcat quarterback and receiver with very limited reps as strictly the QB.
The Eagles certainly aren’t doing Jalen any favors by throwing him into the fire against New Orleans. The Saints defense could be the best unit in the league right now. After the New York Giants upset the Seattle Seahawks last week, Philly is now on the verge of finally being eliminated from playoff contention.
With Carson Wentz playing like one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL this year, and the Eagles basically entering playoff mode, I find it hard to believe Wentz will find his starting job back if the Eagles win. Jalen Hurts was 39-4 as a starting quarterback in college, won a national championship, and finished 2nd in the 2019 Heisman voting. There is no question he has the potential but is Jalen Hurts Philadelphia’s future?
We will find out Sunday.
