Money has been flowing during the NFL off season, and the LA Rams just joined in on the fun. Los Angeles agreed to a five-year/$105M extension with their All-Pro cornerback, Jalen Ramsey.
Early Wednesday morning the Rams tweeted out they have agreed to terms on the extension, thus “Locking down their Lockdown.”
The deal makes for the largest contract ever signed by a cornerback. Jalen Ramsey is the first defensive back in NFL history to sign a $100M+ deal and his $71.2M guaranteed is the most guaranteed to a defensive back as well.
Averaging out at $21M a year, this new deal beats out the next highest paid cornerback by roughly $3.5 million. Darrelle Revis previously held the highest annually contract when he signed a six-year/$96M deal with Tampa Bay in 2013.
Los Angeles acquired Jalen Ramsey from the Jacksonville Jaguars for two 1st round picks and a fourth round pick back in 2019. The pressure has been on the Rams to sign the former Seminole since he landed in Los Angeles.
In Jacksonville we saw Ramsey burst onto the scene, quickly becoming one of the hottest names in the NFL. He recorded nine interceptions and 45 pass deflections during his four seasons with the Jaguars.
Ramsey joins two time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Aaron Donald, who signed his own record breaking deal in 2018. First year defensive coordinator, Brandon Staley, plans to use Ramsey all over the defensive back field this year. Even before training camp started Jalen Ramsey stated he would like to be considered a defensive back not just a cornerback this season.
