The Coppell Cowboys hosted the Lewisville Fighting Farmers for Senior Night this Friday. Both teams were 4-2 coming into this match up, with Coppell being ranked slightly higher in the MaxPreps state rankings. Taylen Green and Damien Martinez would have something to say about though.
Coppell’s offense started things off, but couldn’t find a groove during their first drive. The Fighting Farmers received the punt, and immediately started applying the pressure. Taylen Green helped march Lewisville High School down the field, quickly getting into the red zone. Damien Martinez punched in the first score of the game from two yards out.
With their offense still struggling to find a groove, Coppell relies on their defense to kick things off. Outside linebacker Tim O’Hearn picked off Taylen Green, setting up the Cowboys at the Lewisville 19-yard line. Right before the end of the first quarter the Cowboys were able to tie it up 7-7. K.J. Liggins, Coppell’s top receiver, came down with an amazing catch in the back of the end zone over his defender.
Damien Martinez was busy in the second quarter rushing for his second and third touchdowns of the night. Big plays from Brent Allen, and cornerback Jaydan Hardy, allowed Martinez to rush in for his scores. With under two minutes left in the first half Coppell would turn the ball over on downs, giving Lewisville a chance to extend the lead before half.
The future Boise State quarterback calmly led the Fighting Farmers down the field once again. Michael Odle managed the clock very nicely, setting up for a 32-yard field goal attempt. Unfortunately the Fighting Farmers would miss the kick, ending the half with a 21-7 lead.
Things started getting ugly for the Cowboys in the second half. On their opening drive the Farmers were able to push their lead to 22 points, making things look very grim for Coppell. Taylen Green was able to scramble out of the pocket and find a streaking Brent Allen for a 35-yard touchdown reception. The extra point attempt was bobbled, forcing Green to run it himself in for the two-point conversion.
Down 29-7, Coppell entered depression mode. This would result in yet another turnover on downs, giving Lewisville the ball at their own 45-yard line. In an attempt to run the clock down Lewisville would rush with Damien Martinez once again but would end up scoring off a 15-yard rush.
With just three minutes left in the third quarter the Jason Ngwu was able to rush into the endzone giving Coppell their second score of the night. From here the game would quickly be run down. Green would complete a deep pass to Jalen Price, setting up for a field goal with roughly five minutes left in the game.
Coppell would make small noise with their back ups in, but the game would end 39-14. Damien Martinez had a huge night finishing with four rushing touchdowns and 140 yards.
As they move on to 5-2, Lewisville High School looks to take on undefeated Marcus High School. Two of the top quarterbacks in the Dallas area will face off with Taylen Green leading the Fighting Farmers and Garrett Nussmeier leading his Marauders. Coppell High School will look to bounce back against a winless Plano East team.
