On Friday, I went to see two of the best football programs in North Texas continue their quest for a state championship as the Frisco Lone Star Rangers took on the Midlothian Panthers.
Both teams have SEC commits, and Midlothian would get their running game going early. Junor QB Beau Wendel broke off this 73-yard run to set up the first score of the night.
And when they did finally come up with a stop, Midlothian was gifted an opportunity to REALLY put this game away when Lonestar failed to recover a punt, and gave the ball right back to the Panthers with prime field position.
A few play later Beau Wendel would help Midlothian capitalize off the turnover and punch in a touchdown to make it an 11-point game with just five minutes left.
Sophomore QB Karece Hoyt led the Rangers down the field with precision, hitting Ryder Mix for a touchdown down the middle of the field. Then completing this 2-pt conversion to Davian Groce making it a 35-32 game, and swinging the momentum into Lone Star’s hands.
And just when the Rangers needed it the most, the unthinkable happened. Midlothian would bobble the snap, fumble the ball, & give the Rangers amazing field position with less than 4 minutes in the game.
Karece Hoyt continued his hot hand and with just 2 minutes left, punched in a TD to give the Rangers a lead late in the fourth quarter. The defense would close this game out with back to back sacks helping the Rangers squeak by to the next round. They will take on the Highland Park Scots next week as they look to keep their state championship hopes alive.
