In a year full of downside and sorrow for the Texas Longhorns, one bright spot has always remained. The commitment of Ja’Tavion Sanders, five-star athlete out of Denton Ryan High School. Wednesday morning it became official with Sanders signing to the Longhorns on National Signing Day.
Sanders isn’t just the top recruit for Texas but is also the only five-star recruit in their 2021 class. Though he most likely will play on the defensive side of the ball, I am sure Hudson Card wouldn’t mind him on the other side of the ball. Especially considering all of the talent the Longhorns also have in their 2021 class.
The Longhorns have a heavily defensive group of prospects with safety JD Coffey, edge rushers Derrick Harris Jr and Jordan Thomas, and Jamier Johnson at cornerback. They currently rank 17th overall but have the No. 2 recruiting class in the Big-12.
Texas also had Denton Ryan teammate Billy Bowman committed with Ja’Tavion Sanders earlier this year. Sadly for Longhorn fans the nation’s No. 3 overall ATH decommitted from the Horns back in October. To make matters even worse, Bowman would announce his commitment to the Oklahoma Sooners a month later.
With offers from schools like Alabama, Florida, and Ohio State it is huge for Texas to keep Ja’Tavion Sanders in-state. Heading into this season Sanders amassed over 20 sacks, two interceptions, 70 receptions and over 1,100 yards receiving. Whether he plays on the offense, defense or both sides of the ball; I know he will be a playmaker for the Longhorns.
