Yesterday evening the San Francisco 49ers unsurprisingly beat the New York Jets 31-13. What did surprise many were the amount of injuries that occurred during the game.
The 49ers roster was decimated with serious injuries in yesterday’s game with the Jets. Jimmy Garoppolo was pulled from the game with an ankle injury sustained in the 1st half. Tevin Coleman and Raheem Mostert both went down with knee injuries that will most likely keep them sidelined for “several weeks”. Factor in the fact that they already are missing Deebo Samuel and George Kittle and you really start to question where their fire power is going to come from.
Perhaps the worst injuries came on the defensive side of the ball though. In the 1st quarter sophomore defensive end, Nick Bosa, went down with a left knee injury. Just two plays later former No. 3 overall pick, Solomon Thomas, went down with a left knee injury as well.
Both linemen had to be carted off the field and were ruled out of the game rather quickly. They were scheduled to have an MRI done later that night, but the MRI truck that was going to meet the team in West Virginia broke down. Due to that mishap, Thomas and Bosa were sent to a local hospital to undergo further testing.
San Francisco announced Monday night that the MRI confirmed the torn ACL they had feared for in Nick Bosa.
Just hours after Nick Bosa’s MRI came back with season ending news, the 49ers got word of Solomon Thomas’ injury. Sadly, Thomas suffered the same fate as Nick Bosa and tore his left ACL Sunday evening.
After racking up 42 tackles, nine sacks, and 25 QB hits Bosa took home the 2019 Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. In Solomon Thomas’s four years with San Francisco he was able to record six sacks, 95 total tackles and 23 QB hits.
Suddenly the defensive line that helped the 49ers make a Super Bowl LIV appearance last season is no more. Arik Armstead is the only defensive lineman left that started last season. DeForest Buckner was shipped off to Indianapolis this off-season for a 1st round pick. Javon Kinlaw was drafted as his replacement, but a rookie is only expected to do so much.
While this might not end the 49ers hope for another Super Bowl appearance, it is definitely going to be a rough few weeks for then going forward. San Francisco looks to take on the New York Giants in Week 4 at MetLife Stadium.
