In surprising fashion the No. 1 player in the Class of 2022, Quinn Ewers, announced his commitment to the University of Texas earlier Friday afternoon.
The Southlake Carroll product decided to stay home and committed to the Longhorns over schools like heavily favored Oklahoma and Ohio State. He is not just the highest rated recruit in Tom Herman’s history at the school; Ewers is the highest rated recruit to commit to the Longhorns since Vince Young.
Ewers is looking to join an already talented, but crowded, quarterback room down in Austin. The Longhorns signed 4-star QBs Hudson Card and Ja’Quinden Jackson to their 2020 recruiting class, along with receiving a commitment from Jalen Milroe for the Class of 2021.
Quinn Ewers is the first No. 1 prospect the Longhorns have nabbed since ESPN started it’s recruiting rankings 16 years ago. He is not just the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2022, but some regard him as the best high school quarterback in Dallas/Fort Worth history. That’s right, over names like Matthew Stafford and Kyler Murray.
Last year for the Southlake Dragons Ewers was able to put up historic sophomore season numbers, even for the state of Texas. He finished the year with 4,003 yards, 45 touchdowns and just three interceptions.
I got to watch Ewers play against Duncanville High School last year in the 6A Division 1 State Championship Quarter-Finals and was forced to pay attention to his play on the field. While I admittedly went to the game to watch Duncanville’s Ja’Quinden Jackson (A Longhorn commit himself), Quinn Ewers was by far the best player on the field even as a sophomore. He flashed his big play ability left and right in what would be a 49-35 Texas shoot-out which the Southlake Dragons would come up just short despite a comeback bid.
