No preseason, no problem for the defending Super Bowl Champs. The Kansas City Chiefs showed little to no rust against the Houston Texans on Thursday night. The night started off with the Chiefs unveiling their Super Bowl LIV Championship banner.
Both teams locked arms with one another representing unity and equality After a small wave of boos during the moment of silence, the socially distanced crowd erupted in applause for change and the NFL season to finally be under way.
Defenses we’re on display early as both teams failed to do much during their first drives. Kansas City looked to have a 36-yard touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson, but the catch was ruled incomplete. Houston was able to get the ball moving, and David Johnson rolling, during the second drive.
Johnson capped off the drive with a 19-yard touchdown run, the first of the 2020 NFL season. Fairbaim’s extra point was good.
If you have watched the Chiefs though, it is almost like they enjoy playing down a score. In less than 5 minutes Kansas City marched down to the Houston 8 yard line. A 15 yard Travis Kelce reception, and 19 yard Clyde Edwards-Helaire run were the two highlights of that drive.
Mahomes opened the second quarter with a touchdown six yard pass to Travis Kelce, and suddenly the game was tied, but they didn’t stop there. The Chiefs would go on to score 31 unanswered points and beat the Texans 34-20.
The star of the night was by far Kansas City Chiefs’ rookie running back, Clyde Edwards-Helaire. The former LSU Tiger finished with 138 yards rushing and a touchdown, and had a handful of impressive runs throughout the game. Mahomes would finish throwing 24-32 for 211 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Deshaun Watson also would start to heat up in the second half, and finish throwing 20-32 for 254 passing yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 27 yards and a score as well. Will Fuller V was at the receiving end of nearly half those completions, catching eight passes for 112 yards. David Johnson had his debut with the Houston Texans, and finished with 77 yards rushing, three receptions for 32 yards, and a rushing touchdown.
The Kansas City Chiefs move to 1-0, they look to face the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 2. As for the Houston Texans, they head into their home opener vs the Baltimore Ravens 0-1.
