Rutgers fans received some big news regarding their 2022 football recruiting class on Friday afternoon. Four-star quarterback Gavin Wimsatt announced his decision to commit to Rutgers University. If his commitment sticks this will be the schools best recruit in a decade.
Gavin Wimsatt is a 6’3, 200-pound quarterback from Owensboro, Kentucky. He is currently the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the nation, and the No. 1 player in the state of Kentucky. Wimsatt plays football, basketball, and baseball for Owensboro High School, and helped the Red Devils to a 12-1 season last year. They were able to make it to the KHSAA 5A State title game but ended up losing to Bowling Green High School 17-7.
20 schools have reached out to Gavin Wimsatt and offered him a scholarship. In-state schools like Louisville, and Kentucky were some of the names along with schools like Oregon and Notre Dame. His final nine schools were Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Oregon, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Ole Miss, West Virginia, and of course Rutgers.
Wimsatt’s commitment isn’t just big for the ‘22 recruiting class, but also for the entire football program itself. As mentioned earlier he could be the best recruit to commit to Rutgers in a decade. He is also currently the best quarterback to ever commit to the school surpassing Detroit Lions quarterback Tom Savage.
The Scarlet Knights now have the 6th best recruiting class in the ’22 recruiting cycle. They are currently the No. 2 recruiting class in the Big-Ten behind Ohio State. This is huge for a Rutgers team that is looking to have the light shined back on them. Wimsatt joins players like Anthony Johnson and Amarion Brown atop the Rutgers ’22 class. Greg Schiano has done a great job so far recruiting, and is ready to make a splash in the Big-Ten.
