When you talk about Texas high school football, not many do it better than Katy High School. I was 11 years old the last time Katy High School lost a district football game. I am 23 years old now.
Coming into their matchup against Tompkins High School, the Katy Tigers had won 75 straight district games. Both teams were a perfect 5-0 heading into this match up, but the Falcons were thinking upset all night long.
The Tigers got us started with an offensive drive featuring a heavy dose of the running game. In fact, they would only have 2 yards passing the entire first half compared to their 220 rushing yards. Even with that crazy amount of rushing yards, the Tompkins Falcons were able to hold a 14-10 lead going into halftime thanks to Jalen Milroe’s arm.
The Alabama commit had 124 of his 211 passing yards and two of his three passing touchdowns in the first half. All three touchdown passes went to junior receiver, Josh McMillan, who also had eight receptions for 146 yards.
Katy still played a tough game throughout though. After slightly shrinking the lead to 3 the Tigers had pushed the Falcons out of field goal range and forced them to convert a 4 & 17. Sadly for Katy though, you simply can’t defend a perfect pass, and that is what Milroe delivered.
With less than six minutes left to play, Caleb Koger completed his first touchdown pass of the night to Taylor Saulsberry, bringing the game back within a score. Tompkins had a quick offensive drive, barely taking a minute off the clock, but the Falcons defense stood up to the moment.
With two minutes left in the game Katy was stuck at the 50 yard line and looking at 4th & 13. With no timeouts left Katy failed to convert the fourth down and turned the ball over. Milroe would kneel the game away from there, thus snapping the Katy Wildcats 75 game district winning streak.
Tompkins High School gets a well deserved break after only giving up 19 points in their last four games combined. They will take on Mayde Creek High School Nov 19th. The Katy Wildcats will look to bounce back against Katy Taylor High School next Thursday at 7:00 PM.
