Westlake Escapes with 35–28 Win Over Atascocita

The Westlake Chaparrals proved once again why they’re one of Texas’ most resilient programs, edging out Atascocita 35–28 in a heavyweight showdown last Friday night. In a game that featured explosive plays, turnovers, and plenty of momentum swings, the Chaps found a way to leave George Turner Stadium with a statement win.
Quarterback Rees Wise played calm under pressure, throwing for 187 yards and two touchdowns before sealing the deal with his legs. With the score tied late in the fourth quarter, Wise capped off a run-heavy drive with a 7-yard touchdown to give Westlake the lead for good. The Chaps didn’t throw a single pass on that series, trusting their offensive line and ground game to finish the job.
Atascocita entered the game without quarterback Cardae Mack, but still put up a fight thanks to senior running back C.J. Toney. Toney ripped off three touchdowns, including runs of more than 60 yards, keeping the Eagles within striking distance all night. Junior QB Isaiah Rasheed added a 33-yard touchdown pass to Brian Manuel Jr., showing that Atascocita’s offense still had firepower even without its leader.

The Eagles’ upset bid came undone in the fourth quarter when two costly fumbles flipped momentum. Westlake’s defense tightened up late, with Colton Fromberg recording a huge fourth-down sack and Austin Knapp recovering a fumble to put the game on ice.
For Westlake, this was a gutsy road win that boosts their resume in a loaded Class 6A field. Taking down a Top-10 Atascocita squad—short-handed or not—proves the Chaps can handle big moments. Atascocita, meanwhile, showed plenty of fight despite missing their QB, and with Toney emerging as a reliable playmaker, the Eagles will remain a dangerous team once Mack returns.
Westlake (2–1) heads back home to face Cibolo Steele in another high-profile matchup next week. Atascocita (2–1) gets a much-needed bye before diving into district play.
