Florida Fires Head Coach Billy Napier Amid Another Disappointing Season

The University of Florida has parted ways with head football coach Billy Napier following a 3–4 start to the 2025 season, marking a significant turning point for the Gators program. Napier, who took over as head coach in 2022, compiled a 22–23 record during his tenure, including a 62–35 overall record from his previous coaching positions. Despite a recent 23–21 victory over Mississippi State, the Gators’ administration decided a change was necessary to align with the program’s expectations and aspirations.
Florida’s athletic director, Scott Stricklin, acknowledged Napier’s contributions, particularly in fostering a positive culture and organizational structure within the team. In the interim, longtime receivers coach Billy Gonzales has been appointed as the Gators’ head coach. Quarterback DJ Lagway, a sophomore and five-star recruit, has expressed his commitment to the team and his focus on the upcoming games, despite the coaching change.
