Walnut Grove Extends Winning Streak with Statement Victory Over Anna

Walnut Grove continued its red-hot season Friday night with a statement win over Anna, pulling off a thrilling 45-38 comeback to stay unbeaten. The Wildcats extended their winning streak to seven games in what might’ve been their most impressive performance of the year, rallying from a 14-point deficit late in the third quarter to knock off a talented Anna squad that came in with serious momentum of its own.
Things didn’t start smoothly for Walnut Grove. The Coyotes jumped out to an early lead behind the electric arm of quarterback Ziondre Williams, who connected with wideout Michael Kennedy on a pair of deep touchdown passes to open the game. Williams was nearly unstoppable in the first half, finishing with 375 passing yards and five total touchdowns, while Kennedy racked up 161 yards and four scores. Anna’s offensive line provided time for Williams to pick apart the defense, and midway through the third quarter, it looked like the Coyotes were going to hand Walnut Grove its first loss of the season.
But then, everything changed. Down 38-24, the Wildcats came alive behind junior running back Cameron Newton, who completely took over the game. Newton was a nightmare to contain, exploding for 141 rushing yards and four touchdowns while also catching passes out of the backfield for another 105 yards. His ability to bounce off tackles and find open lanes flipped the energy on the field and inside the stands, as Walnut Grove started to claw back drive by drive.
Quarterback Hayes Hackney showed tremendous poise under pressure, delivering one of his best games of the season. Hackney threw for 360 yards and two touchdowns, spreading the ball around to multiple receivers including Ethan Gray and Bryson Hunt, who combined for more than 180 yards. His accuracy on third down kept the offense on the field, and his leadership helped keep the team calm even as the game reached its most intense moments.
Defensively, the Wildcats’ turnaround was just as impressive. After struggling to contain Anna’s passing attack early, the unit adjusted, tightening coverage and bringing more pressure on Williams. Linebacker Keller Pittenger stepped up with two key sacks, while defensive lineman Parker Olson dominated the line of scrimmage with four tackles for loss and another sack that killed an important Anna drive late in the fourth quarter. Those defensive stands were the difference, allowing Walnut Grove to close out the comeback with authority.
As the final whistle blew, Walnut Grove players celebrated in front of a roaring home crowd, fully aware of what this win meant. It wasn’t just about staying undefeated — it was about proving they can win any type of game, whether it’s a shootout or a defensive slugfest. Head coach Vince Morgan praised his team’s toughness and composure, calling it “a championship-level response” to adversity.
With Lovejoy up next, the Wildcats are carrying more confidence than ever. Sitting at 7-0, Walnut Grove has emerged as one of the most complete teams in the state, blending explosive offense with a defense that finds ways to deliver when it counts. If this latest comeback was any indication, the Wildcats aren’t just chasing wins. They’re chasing something much bigger this season.
