With one game left in the regular season, North Shore High School came into this match up with one goal. Complete their 10-0 season. Friday evening the Mustangs took on Atascocita High School in a highly anticipated Texas High School match up.
After an hour and a half rain delay North Shore was able to receive the opening kick off. On the very first play Dematrius Davis took the ball 48-yards on a quarterback run setting the Mustangs up well. A few plays later Davis used his legs once again to defeat pressure, rushing the ball 13-yards for the score.
Atascocita High School made a quarterback change starting freshman Zion Brown on their first drive. Being thrown into the fire like that you could imagine how his night would go against the No. 2 team in the nation. The Mustangs packed on the pressure, forcing a quick three and out from the Eagles.
The Mustangs were looking to strike again and build a 14 point first quarter lead. Jhalyn Bailey would haul in a nice pass in stride from Davis, and take it further down the field himself. Sadly though while fighting for extra yards Bailey would fumble the ball and the Atascocita Eagles would jump on it.
Zion Brown’s second drive wouldn’t end any better though. Kris Ross and the North Shore defense continued to apply pressure on the freshman quarterback. After being tackled in the back field, Zion Brown would throw an interception the very next play. Who other than Denver Harris would come down with the turnover for North Shore’s defense, giving him six interceptions this year. Harris’ interception gave the Mustangs the ball at midfield. Charles King took a quick completion from Dematrius Davis 28-yards down the field, leaving the Eagles on their heels.
Then Davis decided to show everyone why he is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the nation. Bumping and twisting his way through the defense the future Auburn quarterback scored from 18-yards out. Davis wasn’t the only future Auburn Tiger to help on that scoring play as Jaeden Roberts led the way for his quarterback to score.
Down 14 points the Eagles finally were able to get the ball moving slightly against this North Shore defense. On third and two Brown would take it himself, but wind up short of the first down. Nonetheless the Mustangs were backed up at their own 2 yard line after a plenty on the punt. Da’Veon Ford would flip that real quick though rushing 83-yards to the Eagles 12-yard line. Shadrach Banks would get back to back carries inside the redzone, scoring from three yards out, and extending the lead to 21.
Right before the end of the first quarter the North Shore defense came up with a pick six from cornerback Tavon Griffin. The junior corner returned the interception 30-yard to build a 28-0 Mustang lead at the end of the first quarter.
As the second quarter rolled along North Shore High School was able to keep a steady grip on the game. Even in pouring rain Davis still was completing passes. After a pretty pass to Nessiah Dunham, Shadrach Banks would take a touch pass from Davis 16-yards to the crib.
The Eagles would catch a break with Colby Mouton breaking off a 57-yard run setting them up inside the Mustangs 10-yard line. A few plays later Atascocita put up their first score of the day thanks to a one-yard run from Quincy Thompson.
Dematrius Davis and Shadrach Banks just couldn’t be stopped though. They would connect multiple times on the drive as they worked their way down the field. The drive would be capped off with a two-yard run from Shadrach Banks, his third touchdown of the game. Before halftime Davis would break off a 51-yard touchdown run of his own, his second of the ball game. That would extend the score to a whopping 49-7 by halftime.
Atascocita High School would start off with the ball for the second half and get on a roll. Junior quarterback, Gavin Session, would step in for Zion Brown and move the ball down the field. He connected with Landen King (another Auburn commit) on a long pass, then was able to get the ball within the five-yard line. Unfortunately for the Eagles they would be unable to come away with points on the drive, turning the ball over on downs.
Just like they have all season, the Mustangs took advantage of their turnover immediately. At their own two yard line Davis would complete a short pass to Jhalyn Bailey who took it 97-yards for the touchdown. The Eagles would continue to move the ball with Gavin Session though. After taking a sack, Session completed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Keith Wheeler bringing the game to 56-14.
With two minutes left in the game the Davis and Bailey connected once more, giving Dematrius six touchdowns on the night. This would give the Mustangs their 10th win on the year, completing their undefeated regular season. They now are 47-2 in the Dematrius Davis era.
As for the Atascocita Eagles they will try and bounce back against 4-4 West Brook High School next Friday.
