Today has been a great day for Tampa Bay fans. Earlier Chris Godwin got cleared to play for the Bucs meaning he would avoid starting on the PUP list. Not too long after that the Bucs continued to boost their receiving core by signing 7x Pro Bowler Julio Jones. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter Jones will be joining Tom Brady but contract details are not disclosed at this time.
Julio Jones is coming off a one year stint with the Tennessee Titans where he recorded 31 receptions, 431 yards and a touchdown in 10 games. Back in March the Titans cut Jones after trading two draft picks for him the year before. Cap space issues and injury concerns ultimately made it best to just part ways between the two.
He has over 875 career receptions that he turned into over 13,000 career yards. While his time in Atlanta is perceived to be starving of touchdowns, he was able to record 60 touchdowns in 135 career games with the Falcons. Jones also has the NFL record for most yards recorded in their first 125 NFL games with 12,047.
Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Julio Jones immediately make one of the best receiving units in the NFL. They also have added players like Russell Gage and Kyle Rudolph this offseason. That isn’t even mentioning Cameron Brate who is a very underrated tight end in his own right. Tom Brady might be the oldest quarterback to ever start in the NFL, but with weapons like this it’s hard to see the Buccaneers not contending for a title this season.
